Prime Fishing Conditions in the Passes of Anna Maria Island

Fishing the passes around Anna Maria Island offers an ideal combination of diverse species, strong tidal currents, and breathtaking scenery. These passes, which are natural gateways between the Gulf of Mexico and the intracoastal waterways, create perfect feeding grounds for a variety of fish. Recently, I had the pleasure of guiding a group of anglers on a trip targeting Pompano, Snapper, and Sheepshead in one of these dynamic passes. The conditions were just right, and anticipation was high for a productive day on the water.

The passes are known for their shifting currents and mixed underwater terrain, including sandy bottoms, rocky ledges, and bridge pilings. This variety provides a habitat that attracts a wide range of inshore species, making it a prime spot for anglers looking to reel in multiple catches.

Setting Up for Success: Targeting Pompano, Snapper, and Sheepshead

We set out early in the morning, with the tide beginning to flow, creating the perfect environment for the fish to be actively feeding. Our first target was Pompano, a highly prized species known for its fighting spirit and delicious, flaky meat. Pompano are often found in the swift currents of the passes, where they hunt for sand fleas, small crabs, and shrimp stirred up by the moving water. We used light spinning tackle, rigged with small jigs and tipped with fresh shrimp or sand fleas, which are irresistible to these fast-moving fish.

Next, we focused on Snapper and Sheepshead. Mangrove Snapper, with their sharp teeth and quick strikes, are commonly found around structure, where they can ambush prey. Sheepshead, recognized by their black-and-white vertical stripes, are notorious bait thieves, requiring anglers to have a sharp sense of timing. For these species, we used medium spinning tackle with live shrimp, fishing close to the rocky structures and bridge pilings where these fish are known to congregate.

Action in the Pass: Hooking into Pompano, Snapper, and Sheepshead

As we began our drift through the pass, it didn’t take long for the action to start. The first Pompano hit with a quick, sharp bite, followed by a blistering run that had the angler’s reel singing. Pompano are known for their speed and agility, making them a thrilling catch on light tackle. After a few intense minutes, the first fish was in the boat, its shimmering silver body a testament to the quality of fishing in these waters.

Not long after, we turned our attention to the rocky ledges and bridge pilings for Snapper and Sheepshead. The trick here was to cast close to the structure, letting the bait drift naturally with the current. The Snapper were the first to bite, striking hard and fast. These fish are aggressive feeders, and it wasn’t long before we had several nice-sized Snapper in the cooler.

The Sheepshead, true to their reputation, were a bit more challenging. Their subtle bites and quick reflexes made hooking them a test of skill and patience. However, after adjusting our technique and waiting for just the right moment to set the hook, we began to bring in these tough, striped fish. Their unique teeth, adapted for crunching on crustaceans, were on full display as we admired the catch.
