Inshore Fishing Adventure: Targeting Pompano, Snapper, and Sheepshead in the Passes of Anna Maria Island
Explore the excitement of inshore fishing for Pompano, Snapper, and Sheepshead in the bustling passes of Anna Maria Island....

In early May, I had the pleasure of taking four clients on an unforgettable tarpon fishing trip in Tampa Bay. Harvey Westmaas, a frequent flyer from Grand Rapids, Michigan, chartered me for this adventure. Harvey is no stranger to the thrill of tarpon fishing, and with the prime conditions of the outgoing tide in the evenings, we were set for an exciting day.
The outgoing tide during this time of year is perfect for the summertime crab flush that happens annually in Tampa Bay. Tarpon, known for their impressive size and strength, seemed to know exactly where to be to intercept the crabs flushing from Tampa Bay into the Gulf of Mexico. I prefer fishing around passes, channel edges, and the tips of islands, with Egmont Key being one of my favorite spots to target these 100-pound-plus game fish.
Our day started with us arriving a little early in the tide, giving us a perfect opportunity to scoop up peeler crabs as they flushed by in the outgoing current. With our bait in hand and anticipation building, we prepared for the evening’s fishing. I climbed up into the tower, ready to guide my clients through what promised to be a thrilling experience. Equipped with 9-foot rods and 10,000-size spinning gear, they were all set for the challenge ahead.
As we approached the tip of Egmont Key, I had the clients hand me up two rods, each equipped with corks and crabs. Casting them out into the deeper channel, I could feel the excitement in the air. Within ten seconds of the bait hitting the water, both crabs were eaten simultaneously. Unfortunately, due to the inexperience of the anglers, both tarpon jumped and shook the hooks almost immediately. It was a brief yet exhilarating encounter that left everyone eager for more.
After a momentary heart-to-heart with the clients, offering some guidance and encouragement, we set up for our second drift. This time, our efforts paid off as we hooked a tarpon that stayed buttoned up for good. The routine was set: drift out with the tide, floating crabs in the middle of the channel, get a bite, fight the fish, land it, and then jump back into the channel at the beginning of the island.
Throughout the evening, we repeated this routine several times, and our perseverance was rewarded. We managed to land three out of the six tarpon we hooked, each one providing a memorable fight and an adrenaline rush for the anglers. Harvey and his crew were ecstatic with the results, their gratitude evident as they invited me to dinner that evening.
We met at a local restaurant called The Feast, where they graciously bought my dinner. The evening was filled with laughter and lively banter about the day’s adventures. It was the perfect way to cap off a successful day on the water.
Tarpon fishing around Anna Maria Island is some of the best in the country, and we are incredibly fortunate to have these magnificent creatures at our disposal during their spring migration. These fish travel up from the south, filling areas like Anna Maria Island and Tampa Bay on their annual journey north. It’s an incredible spectacle and one that I never tire of experiencing.
Reflecting on the day’s events, I am reminded of why I love what I do. The thrill of the chase, the beauty of the surroundings, and the joy of sharing these experiences with others make each trip unique and rewarding. Harvey and his crew left with memories that will last a lifetime, and I gained new friends and a reminder of the magic that tarpon fishing brings. As the sun set over the Gulf of Mexico, I knew this was just one of many successful trips to come.
The tarpon season was in full swing, and I couldn’t wait to get back out on the water, ready to create more unforgettable moments with the next group of eager anglers.
