One detail worth understanding: Florida’s Gulf state waters extend nine nautical miles from shore. Every spot we fish on a gag grouper trip — the structure inside Tampa Bay and the nearshore ledges out to about nine miles — sits inside that boundary, so the state season applies to your trip from start to finish. There is no guesswork about which rules are in effect where we are fishing.
Where We Target Gag Grouper Near Anna Maria Island
Gag grouper are structure fish. They hold tight to rock piles, ledges, wrecks and hard bottom, ambushing bait that drifts past and bolting straight back into cover the moment they feel a hook.
We fish two broad zones in September. Inside the bay, Tampa Bay holds more hard bottom and rock than most visitors expect, and those spots produce quality gags without a long run — a real advantage on a four-hour trip or when the Gulf is sloppy. Offshore of that, our nearshore fishing charters work ledges and artificial reefs from just off the beaches out to roughly nine miles, where the fish generally run larger and gather in better numbers.
Which we run depends on the weather, the wind, and where the fish have been biting that week. Trips leave from Holmes Beach on Anna Maria Island and are an easy drive from Bradenton, Longboat Key and Sarasota.

That first ten seconds decides the fight. You have to lean on the fish right away and turn its head, because once it reaches a ledge it will break you off on the rocks or simply refuse to come out. It is a physical style of fishing, and it is why so many guests remember their first gag long after the trip.

There is no single right way to catch a gag. Depending on the location, weather and water conditions we use one of two proven approaches — sometimes both on the same trip.
Trolling Diving Plugs
Trolling large diving plugs lets us cover water and find actively feeding fish. The plugs run deep enough to work along ledges and hard bottom, and the strike is unmistakable — the rod loads up hard and the fight is on before anyone has a hand on it. Trolling shines when fish are scattered across a broad area, or when we are prospecting new structure.
Live Bait on Heavy Spinning Tackle
When we know fish are holding on a specific piece of structure, live bait on heavy spinning tackle is hard to beat. A lively bait presented near the bottom draws aggressive strikes, and heavy spinning gear gives you the leverage to pull a gag up and away from cover before it breaks you off. This is the more hands-on method and the one most guests find the most exciting — you feel every bit of the strike, and you have to react fast.
2026 Gag Grouper Regulations at a Glance
Current FWC regulations for gag grouper in Florida’s Gulf state waters:
- Season: September 1 through September 30, 2026, closing at 12:01 a.m. on October 1
- Minimum size: 24 inches total length
- Daily bag limit: two per person, within the four-fish grouper aggregate
- Captain and crew: may not retain gag grouper on a for-hire trip
- Monroe County: state waters off Monroe County are excluded from this season
On the aggregate: the four-grouper limit is shared across grouper species, so two gags count against your total of four groupers of all kinds for the day.
Anglers fishing from a private boat also need the free State Reef Fish Angler designation — one more thing you do not have to think about on a guided charter, where your license is already covered. Regulations change, so always confirm the current rules with the FWC before you fish.
What Is Included on a September Gag Grouper Charter
Gag grouper trips run on the same setup we use all year across our fishing charters: boat, rods and reels, terminal tackle, bait and licenses are all included. You bring food, drinks, sunscreen and something to carry your fillets home in.
Because gag grouper hold on structure that takes time to reach and work properly, longer trips generally produce better results. A four-hour trip can absolutely put fish in the boat, especially on bay structure, but six-hour and full-day trips give us the range to reach better nearshore spots and fish several of them.
September is also a transition month. Alongside gags we regularly pick up mangrove snapper, king mackerel and other species holding on the same structure, so a trip is rarely one-dimensional.
